BYOT!
You know how this goes. This is an opportunity to say whatever you want about the topic (social media and Tumblr in particular). The only requirement is that you stay focused and intellectual. :) Apply the readings, or relate Tumblr to any topic we have covered this semester.

I think I’ve said everything I like about Tumblr (and other social media) thus far! So I guess I’ll talk about things I am not necessarily a fan of. For one, I don’t like how there is an ask limit. There used to be unlimited asks on Tumblr before, but recently, that has changed. Overall, whether it is Facebook, Twitter, or Tumblr, a majority of the users don’t like change. When I first started using Tumblr, over a year ago, all of your information was on the Dashboard. Your followers, messages, settings, which was much easier to see, since it was right there. When something changes on pretty much any site, some people get outraged, and start complaining. But the way I see it, complaining is not going to do anything. The people who run the site already chose what they want done, and unless everyone dislikes it and decide to leave the site, there is no point in complaining.
Our readings for this week (yes, we’re finally getting to that) discuss “interest-driven” communities and friendships. This may seem like an obvious one, but I’d like to hear how you guys would apply that concept to Tumblr. Use the article and the lecture as your basis.

“She made sure to log in often to check for new messages from friends, read updates about her classmates and comment on friends’ photos. For Tara, this type of participation on a social network site is a critical element of staying socially connected.” (pg 2, Friendship)
I think Tumblr has all the elements Facebook has, and more. You can recieve and send messages to different users (if their ask box is open). You can also post pictures, videos, quotes, or really anything and someone can respond by replying or reblogging it.
….and now for #4…. Some of you have already headed down this road, but I’d like to ask it formally anyway. What are the similarities and differences between Tumblr and other social sites (Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, etc.)? How do you think the limitations or options of a given network impact the type of social interactions that emerge? For example, would people know one another more on Twitter if the posts could be longer? Use whatever composing option you want for this one. If you want to post a picture, go for it.. just add a caption that explains how it is a “response” to this prompt. Obviously going beyond text requires some creativity. :)
AND, yet again, REMEMBER TO USE THE HUM80 TAG!!!!

I think if you are looking for a way to communicate with friends and family, Facebook is the way to go. It’s also a good way to connect with friends who moved and seemed to have fallen off this Earth! That’s one huge reason I use it, to reconnect with friends I haven’t seen in years. Twitter, like I said before, I see as more of a way famous people can let you get a little insight into their lives. It’s a good way to receive information fast, by retweeting. Tumblr, I would say, does a much better job of letting you communicate your interests through ‘gifs’ which facebook does not have, pictures and music. When you first start using Tumblr, it’s like using a blank canvas, and overtime, you grow, as do your interests. And along the way, you’ll find amazing people who share the same interests. :)
Prompt 2: I think you guys should all try to make this one of your three required posts for this week. It might help you understand Tumblr a little bit more, and allow us to analyze how community takes place in such an unfamiliar context.
The question is this: how does posting and/or reposting images express one’s personality and contribute to community?
For this one, you have to pick a topic of interest to you and use the search box. For example, if I search “Buster Keaton” I find a world of posts. If I post an image of my own, I tell those other posters something about my interest in Buster Keaton. So, let’s give this a try. Start thinking of topics that are of particular interest to you. I’ll do it myself so you can see what I mean.

There is no other site, in my opinion, that you can express yourself more on than Tumblr. There are tons of pictures, videos, gifs, and music you can add to your blog. Some blogs have themes to them, so if you like fashion, you can make your blog all about fashion. If you like video games, you can make your blog all about video games. It’s all about expressing yourself, and opening your mind to new things you might have not seen before.
Prompt 2: Using the TEXT post option again, write a short and informal blurb about…. how you think collaboration can and does happen on Tumblr. Answering this may require looking around on the site. I recommend that you use the “Explore” button (from the dashboard) or search terms that relate to your interests. Like last time, think creatively! :)

Reblogging, replying, messaging, searching for tags, liking, and viewing other blogs on Tumblr has a lot to do with collaboration. By liking and sharing it, you are expressing your interest in it. If you find something funny, you can reblog it and share it with your followers. If they also like it, they can reblog it too! Tumblr really is a cool way to share what’s on your mind!
